Abstract

Objectives

We aimed to synthesize research findings identifying factors associated with mental health in undergraduate nursing students early in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods

Seven electronic databases were searched using key terms and subject headings. JBI Critical Appraisal Checklists were used to evaluate research report quality.

Results

Among 23 reports (19 quantitative and four qualitative) meeting inclusion criteria, negative emotional responses to COVID-19 (fear of infection, perceived risk, uncertainty about care/future), negative behavioral responses to COVID-19 (eating behaviors, problematic internet use, insomnia), and negative coping strategies were associated with more adverse mental health symptoms. Conversely, social support, professional identity, preventive behaviors, sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE), and positive coping strategies were related to fewer symptoms.

Conclusions

During a pandemic, undergraduate nursing students require educational support to promote their ability to avoid severe mental health disorders. Also, educators should strengthen students’ professional identity, provide infection prevention knowledge and skills, and supply sufficient PPE.

<p>Objectives: The study conducted to reveal the situation of the globalization in nursing graduate school in Japan that may contribute to promote globalization in it.</p><p>Methods: An anonymous questionnaire sent to the 156 graduate schools have a master course in December 2015. It contains (1) acceptance of foreign students and teachers, (2) study abroad and overseas training of Japanese students, (3) International research and educational circumstances of teachers, and others. Data were analyzed descriptively. Study approval was given by the Nursing Research Ethics Review Board of University of Kochi.</p><p>Result: Seventy-two out of 73 responses were analyzed. About ten to twenty percent of schools accepted foreign students, but only one school had a credit exchange system with overseas universities. In addition, only half were actively communicating with overseas universities. The purpose of this study was to clarify the subjective sleep evaluation and the related factors which influence the evaluation in the middle and advanced age women. A subjective sleep survey using the questionnaire containing the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was conducted. The subjects consisted of 292 women (Mean year : 51.2±12.1), and classified into following six groups : preclimacteric group (N=62, 30-39yrs), climacteric (40-59yrs) (pre-menopausal group (N=71), perimenopausal group (N=24), post-menopausal group (N=54)), post-climacteric group (N=34, 60-65yrs), geriatric group (N=47, 65-80yrs). As a result, geriatric group had "Family requiring care" and took a "Nap" most, while peri-menopausal group had the highest Total Subjective Symptom Score. In terms of the quantity of sleep, post-menopausal group had the highest score in "Sleep duration" in Component PSQI Score. In terms of the quality of sleep, on the other hand, peri-menopausal group had the highest Global PSQI Score and the highest score in "Subjective sleep quality", "Sleep latency", "Habitual sleep efficiency", "Sleep disturbances", and "Daytime dysfunction", while geriatric group did so in "Use of sleeping medication" in Component PSQI Score. Furthermore, "Subjective symptom", especially "Psychoneurotic symptom", was extracted as the most related factor of the subjective sleep evaluation.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate midwifery practices and supply and demand in Ibaraki prefecture, from the perspective of the importance of providing midwifery education of appropriate quality and quantity towards the 21st century. The survey was in the form of a questionnaire distributed by mail to directors responsible for maternal and child health care at 185 institutions including maternity homes, maternal hospitals and clinics, and community health centers. Responses were received from 100 directors (a 54.1% response rate). The data shows that midwives in hospitals have much greater responsibilities in their activities compared with those in clinics. The number of midwives assisting at birth in hospitals was better than that in clinics. Only 3 midwives (0.5%) were hired by community health centers. However, respondents from health centers agreed that graduate courses for midwifery education must be set up in order to strengthen midwives' responsibilities in reproductive health care.

Aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess elementary school children's handwashing practices attending all public schools located at the Sukhbaatar district by using a self-reported questionnaire on handwashing attitude, practice and accessibility to the sanitary facilities at the school. A total of 1694 children participated, and 91% of them washed hands at least ones at school. due to soap availability, one-third of those children used soaps. Handwashing practices at the critical moments were 53.1%-70.2%. The findings of the study showed insufficient handwashing practice.

Every day, about 20 foreigners receive medical care at the University of Tsukuba Hospital (UTH), mainly in the outpatient departments. In 2014, we established a 6-week Medical English course for nurses with the aim of helping them communicate with foreign patients. The course included a number of pertinent topics such as patient data collection, hospital facilities, human anatomy, symptoms, medical history, medications, etc. In addition to textbook materials, we also used department-specific phrase lists prepared by the nurses themselves. The course was offered in each of the hospital’s 10 clinical departments successively. In order to make it convenient for all nurses, we held the same class twice a week at each department after the end of the fixed working hours. We analyzed feedback from questionnaires completed by over 200 nurses who participated in the course from September 2014 to October 2015. The questionnaires covered such parameters as the length, timing, and location of classes, ability to participate, and general satisfaction with the course.
